Chapter Five

KANE

“Oh my God.” Juniper gasps in between laughs. She tightens her grip on my arm as we race toward the coffee shop before it closes. “I can not believe we just did that.”

“Well, you’d better believe it, woman. Because you just gave Mariah Carey a run for her money with your version of ‘Little Drummer Boy.’”

She snorts, her nose wrinkling adorably. “I’m fairly certain Mariah can sleep easily knowing I won’t be coming after her. I was so pitchy.”

“Not to mention out of rhythm.” I duck as she takes a playful swing at me. “Hey, you called yourself pitchy.”

She raises her chin, turning her nose down at me. “That was a constructive criticism to myself.”

“And my feedback was?”

She purses her lips. “Yours was rude.”

I shake my head at her, chuckling as I pull open the door to the shop one of our poor audience members recommended. According to them, this place makes the best hot cocoa in the world.

I doubt anyone can make it as good as my gran. But I’m willing to bet it might be the best in town, or maybe even the county.

We grab our cups of cocoa to go and carry them back outside. We find a bench under a tree strung with fairy lights.

After the day we’ve had, it’s nice to just sit and relax for a minute. Though truth be told, with Juniper seated so closely with her thigh pressed against mine, I’m having a hard time not thinking about that kiss.

It was only tradition. There was mistletoe. We were standing underneath it. What else were we supposed to do?

But when I remember how her body felt molded up against mine—No. I cross my legs to avoid pitching a tent in public.

Juniper arches an eyebrow as she studies me curiously. “What are you brooding about?”

“I’m not brooding.”

I’m just trying not to think about what it would be like to drag her into an alley and make her come with my mouth.

“You look like you’re brooding?”

Fighting a grin, I shake my head. “I was just thinking that even with all of the lights and decorations hanging up, it doesn’t feel like Christmas without a chill in the air or snow in the ground.”

“According to every holiday movie ever made, Christmas is about being with the people you care about.”

I snort. That dry sense of humor of hers is something else. It’s just one more thing to add to the growing list of reasons Juniper is kind of amazing.

“Right. That’s why even though I’d rather be at home in my cabin with the snow piling down, I’ll be spending Christmas morning playing shuffleboard or whatever it is old people do down in Miami.”

She grins. “You can always make a snow angel in the sand.”

“That’s not a bad idea.” I finish off the rest of my cocoa. There’s a question that’s bothering me. Something that has been nagging me in my head since we met. “Can I ask you something?”

“You can ask me anything.”
